The SHIFT randomized controlled trial (R01 HL105495): Health behavior clusters and intervention effects
Presenter: Dr. Ryan Olson
When: Tuesday, April 25th, 2017 2:00 PM - 3:00PM EST
Commercial truck drivers are a priority population for public health intervention. These dispersed workers are exposed to a range of significant safety and health hazards, and have an obesity prevalence that is twice that of the general population. Evidence-based health interventions for truck drivers are very scarce. To address this gap we initiated the "Safety & Health Involvement for Truck drivers" (SHIFT) research program in 2005-06. This line of research included an initial intervention pilot (2009, 2013) followed by a randomized controlled trial with funding from NHLBI trial. SHIFT is a weight loss and health promotion program tailored for truck drivers. The evidence-based intervention components include a weight loss competition supported with computer-based training, behavior and body weight self-monitoring, and motivational interviewing. Training content emphasizes health interactions with occupational safety, including the cross-cutting impacts of sleep. After an introduction we woll review an analysis of five distinctive health behavior (sleep, eating, exercise) clusters of drivers enrolled in the trial. We will then review the health intervention literature for truck drivers and report and discuss SHIFT intervention effects. Comments and questions on research techniques employed, results, future directions, and occupational health research in Organizational Behavior Management will be encouraged throughout the webinar.
Dr. Ryan Olson is a leader in the development of safety and health interventions for isolated workers in dangerous and demanding occupations.
